What is the treatment?
This surgical treatment is required by some patients who do not have enough bone for a dental implant. These procedures are used to rebuild the bone and allow for the placement of an implant at the correct position.
The type of grafting used depends on the size and shape of the missing bone.
Options will be discussed with you according to individual needs and confirmed on written treatment plans, with timing stages and costs of each phase of treatment.

We operate on a dentist referral basis only.
Please speak to your dentist about getting referred to this clinic.
How long does it take?
An initial consultation appointment lasting approximately 20 – 30 minutes will be required. The procedure time can vary between 60-120 minutes, but this will vary on each individual patient’s needs.

Prior to surgery
- Rinse three times daily with chlorohexidine digluconate (Corsodyl Mouthwash) to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.
- It is advisable for you to have had something light to eat and that you wear comfortable clothing on the day of the surgery.
Pain, swelling and bruising may be expected for 7-10 days. During this time you will be prescribed pain killers, antibiotics and mouthwash. Rest and plenty of fluids are advised. Implant/s can be placed after approximately a 4 month healing period.
- Avoid rinsing or spitting out for 24 hours after the surgery.
- If bleeding occurs, roll up a clean cloth handkerchief and pack at the site under pressure for 15 – 20 minutes. Carefully remove it and check that the bleeding has stopped. Pressure should stop the bleeding if it has been applied correctly.
- Plenty of fluid and a soft diet is recommended during the healing phase.
- You will need to take your pain killers and antibiotics as prescribed, usually for 7 – 10 days.
- After meals, you should rinse with warm water and salt. Cotton wool balls soaked in Corsodyl mouth wash can be used to swab the site to help prevent infection, twice daily.
- If you are wearing a denture and feel that it is pressing on the surgical site, please leave it out as much as possible and contact the clinic for a review appointment so that the denture can be adjusted, as soon as possible.
If you have any concerns at all please contact the clinic.
It is possible that you may experience the following:
- Infection and/or failure of the graft.
- Insufficient successful graft bone to accept implants. In these cases further grafting may be necessary.
- The risk of failure is higher in certain individuals, particularly those who smoke.
- There is a higher risk of failure in implants placed into grafted bone rather than natural bone.
