What is the treatment?

This is a surgical treatment is required by some patients undergoing the insertion of a dental implant.

These procedures are used to rebuild the bone and allow for the placement of an implant at the correct position.

The type of grafting used depends on the size and shape of the missing bone.

  1. Small defects can be rebuilt using special “biomaterials” at the same time as implant placement.
  2. Large defects may require block grafts prior to implant placement using your own bone, usually from either the chin or the wisdom tooth area and placing it at the space requiring the implants.
  3. Variations of  1 and 2 above may be used.

Options will be discussed with patients according to individual needs and confirmed on written treatment plans, with timing stages and costs of each phase of treatment.

Any discomfort can be minimised by the following regime:

  • Avoid rinsing or spitting out for 24 hours after the surgery.
  • If bleeding occurs, roll up a clean cloth handkerchief and pack at the site under pressure for 15 –  20 minutes. Carefully remove it and check that the bleeding has stopped. Pressure should stop the bleeding if it has been applied correctly.
  • Plenty of fluid and a soft diet are recommended during the healing phase.
  • You will need to take your pain killers and antibiotics as prescribed. Usually for 7 – 10 days.
  • After meals, you should rinse with warm water and salt. Cotton wool balls soaked in Corsodyl mouth wash can be used to swab the site to help prevent infection, twice daily.
  • If you are wearing a denture and feel that it is pressing on the surgical site, please leave it out as much as possible and contact the clinic for a review appointment so that the denture can be adjusted, as soon as possible.
  • You can expect pain, swelling and possibly bruising after a bone graft for 5 – 10 days. A sick certificate will be issued at reception if required.

What can I expect after receiving this treatment?

Pain, swelling and bruising may be expected for 2 weeks post operatively. During this time you will be prescribed pain killers, antibiotics and a mouth wash. Rest and plenty of fluid is advised.

A recovery period of one week is recommended and a sick certificate can be issued at reception if required. Implant/s can be placed after a 4 month healing period.
